Dental microscope has become part of our work. Some treatments such as root canal treatment, we cannot even imagine without it. The device is relatively expensive but the benefits are priceless.
And why? Every person is different and our teeth are also very different. In two different people a root in one tooth can have a different number of root canals, and root canals can also differ in shape. It is this variability, anomalies and even the shape or the number of root canals that used to be a common cause of failure of endodontic treatment.
But we cannot wonder because to reveal the structure of the size of a few hundredths of millimeters to the naked eye is almost impossible. And just finding a supernumerary root canal and treating it may be the key to success.
Endodontics done under the operating microscope is better, mainly on basis of long-term prognosis. Benefits of microsurgical treatment of root canals are noticeable not only in primary endodontic treatment, but particularly in re-endodontics, meaning refilling the root system.
The operating microscope as an instrument that can deliver magnification was introduced into dental practice in the early 90's (1982). In Slovakia, working with it just gradually gets into the awareness of dentists and so unfortunately is not part of routine dental ambulance.
